Amreeka (Arabic for "America")takes a poignant look at the immigration experience of an ordinary Palestinian mother and her teenage son as they move from Bethlehem to an Illinois suburb. Muna (Nisreen Faour)has high hopes for herself and Fadi (Melkar Muallem), her son, but they quickly discover assimilation into American culture will challenge them in ways they never expected, and that their dream of a better life isn't without its share of disappointments.

There have been innumerable movies made about the brutality of the Nazis during WWII but very few about the brutality of Stalin during the same time period. This movie gives us a window into the suffering of the innocent people who were being oppressed and murdered in Soviet occupied territories and it's every bit as heartbreaking. Not always easy to watch but a very well done film that deserves to be seen. The cinematography is outstanding, and the acting is first rate. 4 1/2 out of 5 stars.

This is the story of the bear that inspired A.A. Milne to write his enchanting Winnie the Pooh series of stories. Winnie (short for Winnipeg) was a bear celeb in her own right, having been adopted as a cub by a conscripted veterinarian undergoing basic training in Canada. Eventually, he smuggles Winnie to England before having to consign her into the care of the London Zoo when his deployment orders send him to battle during World War I. A touching film the whole family can enjoy.

I'm old enough to remember the "back to the land" movement of the '60's and '70's when disillusioned city dwellers fled their urban life in pursuit of a more natural way of living. Usually this involved buying a piece of marginal land without water or electricity and through hard work and perseverance, eking out a homesteading lifestyle reminiscent of their forbears from the previous century. I was reminded of that idealistic time as I watched this documentary of a young couple and their dog striving to restore a desolate piece of ground using holistic, biodynamic methods designed to work with nature rather than against it. Unlike the "back-to-the-landers" who longed to return to a "simpler time", this couple (with a lot of help from their friends) are actively working toward finding a way to co-exist with the larger world while becoming self-sustaining. Filmed over a five year span, we see the successes and failures, the highs and the lows, of pursuing a worthy dream. Highly recommended for those interested in farming or gardening as well as those interested in botany, wildlife, or holistic living.

In this coming of age drama, director Gurinder Chadha delves into the immigrant experience of working class Pakistanis in Thatcher's Great Britain. Much like Bend It Like Beckham, Blinded by the Light is largely about the culture clash between traditional "Asian" parents and their anglicized offspring. This movie, however, also shines a light on the bigotry and fanaticism of far-right extremists (the NF) and their sympathizers, who because of rising unemployment, become more and more vitriolic in their treatment of non-white immigrants. Javed puts a human face on the trials of trying to become your own person in the face of overwhelming cultural pressures to conform, as wells as societal pressures to accept second-class citizenship. Javed faces these each of challenges using the music of the "Boss', Bruce Springsteen, as his guide, even singing portions of Springsteen's iconic songs in certain situations. Based on a memoir, this is a very specific look at a turbulent time period in Great Britain's recent history, through the eyes of someone who lived it.

A terminally-ill young boy, Pete Carlton (Marc Donato), has only one wish--to see the elusive Blue Morpho butterfly in its natural environment, but, as a resident of Canada, his chances of fulfilling that dream are next to zero. In desperation, Pete's mother, Teresa (Pascale Bussieres), writes to a famous entomologist known for his butterfly locating skills, Alan Osborn (William Hurt), in an effort to convince the scientist to take Pete along on his next trip to the rainforest. Reluctantly, Osborn agrees, despite Pete's worsening condition and the trio travel to the Amazon for the adventure of Pete's life. A touching drama with a hopeful ending that will stay with you long after the credits roll.

When golden-ager Mabel Lederer buries her deceased husband, Hughie, she discovers that though her spouse might be dead, he certainly isn't gone. In fact, his demise has somehow resurrected Mabel's long-suppressed clairaudient abilities allowing Hughie to harangue her from beyond the grave while she systematically de-Hughies their home, selling and/or burning every vestige of his earthly possessions, including his prized paintings. In search of a fresh start, and to escape Hughie's constant criticism, Mabel buys a one-way ticket on the next available train, riding it to the "end of the line". What follows is Mabel's metamorphosis into the person she's always wanted to be as she sheds her old life and old name in favor of a new name--Angela Motorman-- and a new profession -- mediumship -- or as Mabel/Angela likes to put it, "dabbling in the supernatural". Based on an unfinished Shirley Jackson novel, this story of one woman's late-stage journey to self-actualization stars Estelle Parsons and is directed by Joanne Woodward.

For those who aren't aware, the "Up" Series is a wonderful documentary series from Great Britain that was begun in 1963 with a group of 7 year olds from all different social-economic backgrounds. Some are extremely poor, while others are more well-to-do. The premise is based on the saying "show me a child when he is seven, and I will give you the man." In other words, the impulses, interests and personality of a seven-year-old will be predictive of that child's future. Every seven years, the film crew returned to interview the participants, and it is this seven-year cycle that is so addictive for the viewer. As we watch, we see the evolution of each of these individuals, some in ways that aren't surprising at all while the journeys of others are completely surprising. The films document the 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th, 35th, 49th, and 56th years of the original participants, and all of these are available to US audiences. A 63rd year version of the series has been filmed and was shown in the UK but sadly, this latest edition is not available to Region 1 viewers. Now that Michael Apted, the director, has passed away, it is unclear whether we will have any additional versions, but that doesn't detract at all from the enormously moving compendium that has already been completed. This is truly a film series that contributes to our understanding of ourselves and our fellow humans. Highly recommended.

What happens when a phony psychic manages to convince the wrong person that he can speak with the dead? That is the setup for this twisty tale that takes a dark look at the lure of fame and the vulture-like mentality of those who prey upon the victims of "true crime". Ed Harris and wife Amy Madigan have minor roles as the parents of fast-talking con man Michael Vaughn (Rich Sommer) whose glib manners and ability to "read the room" have lead him into a life of conning and film-flamming, culminating in a career as a "psychic". Joanne Froggatt (Anna from Downton Abbey with a very believable American accent) plays his long-suffering accomplice while Clifton Collings Jr. plays a guilt-ridden murderer desperate to rid himself of the painful after effects of a life-altering decision from his past.

Here we have quite a different take on the age-old question of where do we go after we die. Fisk Sr., after losing a son in the Boer War and his grieving wife shortly thereafter, has carved out a life that keeps him at arms length from anyone to whom he might grow close. His only remaining relative, son Fisk Jr, dutifully visits his curmudgeonly father once a week, but soon finds that he and his father have very little in common. On a whim, he convinces his father to come with him to see a transcendentalist swami who is giving a lecture. The swami doesn't offer much, but another audience member, one Dean Spanley, a clergyman with a penchant for a particular rare wine, is quite another proposition. A clergyman at a Hindu's lecture on the nature of souls is a novelty Fisk Jr. never expected to see, and he becomes intrigued to the point that he pursues an acquaintance with the Dean who has an interesting story to tell while he is under the influence of his favored libation. Through the course of this improbable friendship, both Fisk Sr. and Fisk Jr. come to a better understanding of each other, of the nature of grief, and of the mysteries that lie beyond the veil.

June 17, 2015, nine innocent African-Americans were massacred at the historic Emanuel AME church in Charleston, South Carolina by a white 21-year-old gunman. This documentary interviews the families of the victims, as well as gives context regarding the community and its history. Rather than focus on the hatred and bigotry of the gunman, we get to know the loving and kind church members who were the victims of this senseless crime through the testimony of their loved ones.

Writer/director Josh Fox didn't set out to make a documentary about the implications of natural gas fracking on the water wells of hapless residents living nearby until a lease agreement for the right to frack on his Pennsylvania property landed in his own mailbox. His understandable concern led him to a neighboring community already in the midst of a fracking water crisis with numerous resident's wells contaminated by carcinogenic chemicals, flammable gases and toxic metals. Alarmed, Fox attempts to gather additional information by reaching out to various industry representatives and political officeholders only to be stonewalled at every turn. He then goes on his own fact-finding mission, traveling across the country interviewing residents with their own horror stories to tell about the environmental implications of the fracking process. A sobering introduction to the side effects of fracking technology.

Delightful romp featuring a pair of convicts (Northam and Zahn) who after an unlikely escape from a prison van, steal a dilapidated RV as a getaway vehicle. It soon becomes apparent that the previous owners of the RV were a gay couple who traveled around as beauty pageant consultants. What better way to hide out from the law than to pose as gay pageant consultants in the sleepy town of Happy Texas? But things aren't as easy as they seem, especially when the law (Macy)gets involved. Having a low budget doesn't detract at all from this hidden gem, especially when a sharp script is put into the hands of experienced comedic actors.

If you're a fan of slice of life films like I am, you'll be happy you watched this one. Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother) wrote, directed and starred and I think he knocked it out of the park on all three fronts. You'll see an uncredited cameo by Richard Jenkins who as far as I'm concerned is one of the most underrated character actors working today. Kate Mara is lovely and the child actor who played Rasheen was quite good. To be a first time director and get a performance like that from a child actor showed Mr. Radnor has some real talent behind the lens. 4 1/2 stars out of 5.

"Let Justice Be Done Though The Heavens Fall"
New York defense attorney Samuel Leibowitz (Timothy Hutton) had not lost a capital murder case in his 25 years of practice when he was approached to defend a black teenager in a retrial for the alleged rape of a white woman in Alabama in 1931. The sentence of Haywood Patterson, one of the nine Scottsboro Boys, had been set aside by the Supreme Court and he was set for a retrial in Huntsville. Leibowitz, after reviewing the case file, felt compelled to take up Patterson's defense and traveled to Alabama confident that he could get his client acquitted. But Leibowitz soon realizes he has a lot to learn about how the law is administered in the Jim Crow south where Lady Justice is not blind, especially when the accused is a black man and the accuser is a white woman.
Notes of interest - Harper Lee was heavily influenced by the Scottsboro Boys' case when she wrote To Kill a Mockingbird. The cast and crew of "Heavens Fall" were in the midst of filming when Hurricane Ivan hit in 2004 causing production delays.

In the aftermath of a personal tragedy that leaves her emotionally broken, Edee struggles to cope. When psychotherapy provides little relief, she decides to retreat from society completely, buying a rundown cabin on a remote mountaintop, and sequestering herself away from all human contact. She soon finds that she is ill-equipped for the rugged lifestyle necessary for survival in the breathtakingly beautiful but unrelentingly harsh environment she has chosen to live in. By the time winter arrives, she is low on supplies and even lower on hope. When Miguel, a passing hunter, checks the cabin after noticing the chimney is no longer putting out smoke, he finds Edee curled up on the floor, hypothermic and barely clinging to life. Despite her weak protests, he sets to work nursing her back to health, despite his own emotionally painful past, giving them both a reason to go on in the wake of their tragic losses.

Despite the predictable storyline, Loch Ness does have its charms. The Scottish scenery for a start. The U.K. cast anchored by Ian Holm (always enjoyable), a luminous Joely Richardson, earnest James Frain, and spunky Kirsty Graham for another. Ted Danson as an embittered, disgraced scientist, less so for my taste but that's a personal preference. Not quite as kid-friendly as it could have been which is a shame. Instead, the movie was weakened by a rush-to-the-bedroom "romantic" subplot that would have been much better had it been a slow burn with simmering looks and longing as two adults struggle with inappropriate feelings. Drawing that subplot out would have strengthened the ending and provided more satisfaction to the viewer in my opinion. As it stands, this is an okay way to spend a couple of hours but it could have been much more with a different directorial vision.

Marlowe refuses the offer, instead embarking on a trek through glamorous Old Hollywood to unravel the secret to the missing man's whereabouts. Though Neeson's physique is showing its age, he's still an intimidatingly large unit with a face that looks as if it was carved from a mountain, lending credibility to the bareknuckle nature of Marlowe's investigational tactics, though Marlowe himself does remark "I'm too old for this sh**" after breaking a chair across a thug's back. But Neeson action movie fans, don't despair. That moment of clarity is soon forgotten when the next group of thugs appears.

While the major shows initial interest in Miss Bentley as well, his head is soon turned by the idle flirtations of a much younger guest, Miss Beaumont, an American nanny in the employ of a vacationing family. ![]() ![]() | My Fellow Americans (1997) Actors: Jack Lemmon, James Garner, Dan Aykroyd Release Year: 1997 Date: 12/21/2019 9:20 ET |
As timely now as it was when it was made, this tale of two ex-presidents forced to work together to expose Washington corruption still resonates in our current political climate. Lemmon plays a stodgy, money-grubbing Republican ex-president named Russell Kramer, while Garner plays a womanizing, self-promoting Democratic ex-president named Matt Douglass. Polar opposites in both political party and personality, these two have absolutely nothing in common, except, a love for their country and a desire to make a difference. But that makes this movie sound much more serious than it really is, because, at the heart of it, this is a very funny road comedy starring two of Hollywood's most likable actors. The zingers fly fast and furious throughout, with quite a few quotable lines. Here's an example.
Russell Kramer: "I was Time Magazine's 'Man of the Year'.
Matt Douglass: "So was Hitler."
Russell Kramer: "Not twice."
The supporting cast also carries their fair share of water. Dan Ackroyd, Wilford Brimley, John Heard, Selma Ward, Esther Rolle and Lauren Bacall to name a few. But Everett McGill as Colonel Paul Tanner aka "The Twisted Psycho" cuts the widest swath as the rogue NSA operative with his own agenda, lending just the right amount of malice to elevate this film from a light-weight road comedy, to an incisive political commentary that makes you laugh but also makes you think.

Set in Melbourne in 1886, the story centers around the murder of an inebriated gentleman inside the hansom cab employed to take him home after a night out on the town. Long-buried secrets and scandals soon resurface as the death investigation progresses, leaving those closest to the unfortunate victim forever changed.

I'm a big fan of Martin Freeman and his very dry British sense of humor. He does not disappoint in this. If you're looking for something a bit different to watch this Christmas, give this one a try.

A quiet drama, composed of meditative stories regarding people's emotional attachment to things or the lack there of. Like links in a chain, we begin with one story, which is linked to a second story, which is linked to a third and so on. Each vignette illuminates an aspect of "object ownership" from a variety of points of view including an appraiser, a sports memorabilia dealer, a widow, etc, all filtered through the melancholy lens of loss. This movie certainly won't be to everyone's taste and will appeal mainly to those who enjoy contemplative dramas that make you think. The acting was top-notch as well.

This movie is one of those that will appeal to some and not to others. I personally found it hilarious and quote lines from it all the time, like this one from stoner brother Lance (Jack Black)-"I didn't go to college and check me out. I'm kick a--!"-- Or this one from mom (Catherine O'Hara) -- " I look like a piƱata." when she's trying to squeeze into a too-tight dress all while slugging down a drink. Maybe not for everyone, but this is one of my personal favorites. Your mileage may vary.

Superbly staged version of this well-known rock opera. Each of the principals beautifully meld acting and superior singing to bring the storyline to life. Clever staging and elaborate props add to the experience. Thoroughly enjoyable.

"Getting all the wrong pieces right."
Stay-at-home mom Agnes (Kelly Macdonald) has spent her adult life taking care of others, losing her own identity in the process. That all changes with the gift of a jigsaw puzzle for her birthday. She discovers she not only has a real gift for puzzling but also a strong desire to pursue the hobby in a more serious way. Just as a jigsaw puzzle is solved decision by decision, so too Agnes begins to break out of her closed-off domestic shell decision by decision. Along the way, she transforms her vision of the woman she wants to be, profoundly changing not only her own life but the lives of her husband, her sons and her competitive puzzling partner in ways none of them expected.

Ignore the list of actors. The actual cast are the marvelous Eileen Atkin, Malcolm McDowell, Michael Jayston and Karen Doric. This first entry in the Mystery! series by PBS stands up quite well 45 years later. Wicked stepmother Vanity Fair (Eileen Atkins) is set to inherit a fortune if she can secure the marriage of her stepdaughter, Jenny (Karen Doric), before she comes of age, nullifying the terms of Vanity's late husband's (and Jenny's father's) will. With the assistance of a motley crew of accomplices, Dame Fair nearly accomplishes the feat at the outset only to have her plan foiled by the untimely death of the prospective groom at the altar. Vacationing English lord Richard Chandos (Malcolm McDowell) accidentally discovers the groom's dead body and finds himself drawn into the web of a master manipulator with an evil plan.

Those of a certain age might remember the story of the three triplet brothers who found each other by happenstance and became a media sensation. What most won't know is the story behind how they were separated and why. This documentary tells that story, and it's a doozy.
