As far as music-oriented documentaries go, "Young@Heart" is pretty damn cool! There's the hard-driving 50-something music coach who, deep down, is a softy whose bark is bigger than his bite. There are the chorus members or participants themselves: Their individual concerns, concern for one another, family dynamics, etc. And then there are the audiences in front of which they sing, who appreciate the effort and energy the entire group puts into delivering punk/rock classics with gusto. This film is fun, touching and unique.

Watched this DVD with my 79 year old mother. I can not recall the last time that I have heard her giggle, laugh out loud, and also express amazement at what "all those old people" could do! Sure there are a couple of sad moments involving members of the choir seriously ill and even dying, but handled respectfully and with honor--even dignified in how tributes were made in their honor. This DVD should be classified as a "documentary that tells a story" about real people in real time. The choir director has a marvelous sense of humor and really knows how to tease out the very best in those who might not always feel up to the challenge...useful techniques to file away for any of us who deal with older family members or older friends. Definitely uplifting. Definitely worth all the stars.
