A short yoga routine targeted to the hips

"Kundalini yoga instructor and wellness consultant Kristen Eykel offers this short yoga routine for Hips, one of five DVDs in her 12-Minute Yoga Emergency Series. The Hips practice 14 minutes long, and unlike the other practices in these series, it is filmed indoors, in front of a crackling fireplace. Eykel begins with several variations of forward bending, including butterfly/cobblers and wide angle. Next comes a mild kneeling backbending series which concludes with an optional full camel pose. The influence of Eykel's Kundalini teaching seems apparent in the move which follows, as it involves sitting on one hip, raising with arms overhead, and coming back down on the opposite hip. Eykel continues this exercise for one minute before moving on to a classic hip opener, pigeon pose. She concludes the practice with kneeling hip circles, child's pose, and a final "sat nam."
Following the yoga routine, there is an approximately 11-minute meditation for Hips (about 2 minutes of guided relaxation continuing with 8 minutes of nature sounds). There are also 2 "Stressbusters" on this DVD, each about a minute long: 1) an overview of Acupressure, and 2) Chocolate Rx, a review of the health benefits of dark chocolate. Overall, this Hips DVD offers the option of a short yoga workout addressing an area that can often become tight resulting from the prolonged sitting that many of us do as a result of modern-day life. Eykel presents a practice that is generally accessible for most levels.

"I love these workouts! They feel calming and relaxing, but they are powerful! In addition, I like having the ability to target specific areas, as I don't always have time for a full workout.
Kristen is amazing! She will gently lead you through the exercises while explaining their benefits. She makes you feel as though you are sharing yoga time with a friend.
I will definitely purchase the entire Yoga Emergency collection."
Useful, but not the best value

"This is a useful routine for opening the hips. However, I can't help but think that Kristen Eykely could have put all her short routines on one DVD for a better value. As it is, if you want to target the 4 areas, you'd have to spend $40 to get all 4 DVDs.
I recommend two dvds over this one because they are a better value. The "Perfect in Ten: Yoga, 10-minute Workouts with Susan Grant (currently $13.49) has 5 workouts, and the destress workout is mainly targeted at opening the hips. Rodney Yee's "A.M. Yoga for Your Week" (currently $19.49) also has 5 workouts, including a wonderful hip opening workout that is actually about 26 minutes.
