Adventuresome performances by top jazz artists like guitarist Pat Metheny and pianist Chick Corea are highlighted in this hour-long program, recorded in 1981 in Woodstock, New York. But while the music is a strong suit, tr... more »uth in advertising definitely is not. The package's cover art and text imply (without actually claiming) that Corea, Metheny, drummer Jack DeJohnette, and saxophonists Anthony Braxton and Lee Konitz, virtuoso players all, appear onstage together, and they do--on exactly one of the nine tracks. Meanwhile, others who appear prominently, like percussionist Nana Vasconcelos, aren't mentioned or pictured at all. Together or not, everybody's in top form. No smooth jazz here; this is hard-edged, uncompromising music, including versions of John Coltrane's "Impressions" and Miles Davis's "All Blues" (the one full-ensemble tune). Audio quality is excellent; visuals are good, if not up to today's digital standards. This is the real deal--just not quite as real as you might think. --Sam Graham« less

"When looking at the lable on this DVD, you will be led to believe that Chick Corea, Pat Metheny and Jack Dejohnette are featured prominately. Not so. Very little of the headliners."
Misleading

"There is some good footage of some great players on this DVD, but Pat Metheny and Chick Corea are barely in it."
Disappointing

"Amateurish video quality; Pat Metheny hardly plays; cover is misleading. Nana Vasconcelos' percussion solo is an unexpected treat, but it isn't enough to salvage this disappointing DVD."

Worth Having

"Yes, as pointed out below, this is not just Corea, Metheny, and Konitz, but I don't think the other musicians on the disc should be cause for dissapointment. Marilyn Crispell plays on the first tune, as does Ed Blackwell; there's a nice "ethno" piece including Karl Berger and Mr. Blackwell; and Dewey Redman plays on "Broadway Blues" (with Metheny, Miroslav Vitous, and Jack Dejohnette). "The Song Is You" is simply Anthony Braxton singing a Lee Konitz solo on said tune to Lee Konitz, which is nice to see. "Impressions" is a quartet of Braxton, Chick, Miroslav, and Jack - Braxton's solo is really kickin'. "Stella By Starlight" is a duet with Chick and Konitz, and "All Blues" features the "Impressions" quartet plus Konitz and Metheny. The "ethno" piece makes for some good variety, Miroslav takes some very clear arco bass solos, Jack sounds great, the Konitz/Corea duet goes some nice places, and of course there's that great Braxton solo. While some of the disc seems like an all-star pick-up gig, I think it's worth having."
