Summerslam Reaches Greatness
J-Man | 07/04/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)
"The best possible way to describe this PPV is with one simple word, phenominal. This edition of Summerslam presented us with great action, the crowning of the "Next Big Thing", the return of HBK, and very few flaws. This one is simply 3 hours of solid action.
Kurt Angle vs. Rey Mysterio
I've yet to see a greater opener than this one in recent memory. Angle's technical style mixed so well with Mysterio's underdog, highflying ring work. The action is compelling and crisp from start to finish, with nice chain wrestling menouvers and exceptional counters and reversals. This match is only a taste of what was to come. Fact is, this is how a opening PPV presentation should be, because Angle and Mysterio pulled off a fantastic match. 5/5
Chris Jericho vs. Ric Flair
While this match would top their later Unforgiven 2002 bout, this was no where near close to even touching the level of a match Kurt Angle and Rey Mysterio put on. This match displayed some dirty tactics, as Jericho took a page out of "The Dirtiest Player in the Game's" book. While this was slow at times, it had those entertaining spots such as each man attempting to pull of the other's submission. This was a decent outing by Jericho and Flair, but it wasn't close to being the best of the night. 3.5/5
Edge vs. Eddie Guerrero
This was a really good way to start off the trilogy of matches these two had. In my personal opinion, i believe this stood to top their later Unforgiven 2002 matchup, but their last battle under No Disqualifications took the cake, but this one is still solid by all means. The story was Guerrero targeting the injured arm of Edge, which led to a nice frog splash targeting that same injury. This was a pretty good one from these two, as it took 2nd place for me in the trilogy. 4/5
WWE World Tag Team Championship
Un-Americans (c) vs. Booker T and Goldust
This was before the Tag Team division really picked up on a hot streak, so cut it some slack. I enjoyed each team, as they were creative in their own way, but this is the only match i didn't enjoy on the card. When it comes down to it, the bad outweighed the good. 2.75/5
Intercontinental Championship
Chris Benoit (c) vs. Rob Van Dam
You've all heard it before, this one is indeed a "lost classic". The technical wrestling display is very well done. I know some of you proboly don't like to watch Benoit and maybe haven't seen much because of the 2007 tragedy, but if there is any Benoit match to check out, this would be one of them. RVD and Benoit put on a phenominal Smackdown vs. Raw contest as this is one of the best of the night. 5/5
Undertaker vs. Test
Of course, this isn't a great match, but it is good for a big man presentation. Undertaker is one of the all time greats and he made test look solid, in a decent kind of way. There is some interference from Un-americans, but in the end, taker takes the win. Decent at best, but it is watchable. 3.5/5
Unsanctioned Street Fight
Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H
Along with the main event, this was my favorite match on the card and probobly my favorite contest between these two rivals and friends. This match told such a story as it was Shawn Michael's 1st in-ring outing in over a 4 year span and ring rust was not a factor. These two went all out, giving us a compelling, brutal and physical battle. This one is perfectly described as a fight, as their were "toys" brought in such as the trusty ladder which went along with a very nice table spot, and of course, more included. The blood on each man after this proves the level of physicallity in this one. To sum it all up, "HBK" and "The Game" put on 30 minutes of excellence. 5/5
WWE Undisputed Championship
The Rock (c) vs. Brock Lesnar
Michael Cole said it right in one of his better comentary moments, as he stated "this is the most anticipated Summerslam main event in history". As other reviewers have stated, it is a shame we never saw a Rock/Brock II rematch, but this one match will not leave you empty handed. This match had such huge hype as it catapolted Lesnar into greatness. He did not dissapoint as he mixed it up well with "The People's Champ", to where it got to the point of the crowd cheering him on as well. As we all know, the ending crowned "The Next Big Thing" as champion as he started his title run on a strong note in this fantastic main event. 5/5
This is a dvd i recommend to every fan, because i strongly believe you have to see this if your a huge WWE mark as i am. The matches are great from start to finish, with a couple of exceptions. But, minus that, you have a spotless 5 star event."
