A fantasy-romance story about a young woman who treats children's trauma taking the place of a deceased mother in a father-son relationship. I use the term 'fantasy' because of the naivety regarding how the protagonist simply assumed the role of mother (as opposed to step-mother) in a blended family - it was sort of 'Brady Bunch' in how perfect it all works out. This ending wrapped rather quickly considering much of the film is padded out using long sequences of Italian countryside and architectural scenery instead of plot-moving elements. There are a few freaky scenes where the boy verges on psychotic, and then some later scenes where you might think the protagonist has flipped her lid. I think the movie could have been improved if these things were expanded rather than the aforementioned long, boredom-inducing sequences where she walks around the house, the forest, the grounds, etc. I think these parts might appeal to viewers who really enjoy scenery, but the film only clocks in at exactly 1.5 hours, so it felt like these scenes were just being used to hit a given length for a feature film. Emilia Clarke is key to the film being what it is - she is very capable of showing emotions via facial expressions in these non-dialogue scenes. This is definitely a romance movie with a few supernatural elements, not a horror/thriller - those looking for a ghost story can avoid this one as the characters basically accept the existence of a ghost and make no attempt to investigate it, explain it, or do anything that people might normally do when faced with unexplained phenomenon.

I know it said it was set in the 1950s, but it seemed much older than that (costumes, settings, etc.). A very subtle mystery thriller without being gory or too scary. Now I wonder about ghosts!
