I had all the VeggieTales tapes as a child, so when I ran across cheap used copies of this and Sweetpea Beauty, I decided to pick them up to see how the series was doing. While I thought Sweetpea was every bit as good as the episodes I'd grown up with, It's a Meaningful Life strikes me as far too saccharine and lacking the humor that's always been so important to VeggieTales. Most VeggieTales episodes aren't heavy-handed in delivering their messages, but this one just seems didactic. It might well have been good as a shorter story (like "The Tale of Flibber-o-Loo" or "Dr. Jiggle and Mr. Sly"), but it can't hold its own as a full episode.

The quality still is high with It's a meaningful Life. This is a "remake" of It's a Wonderful Life; the old b&w Christmas version with (I believe) Donna Reed & Jimmy Stuart.....with a little Polar Express thrown in for good animation. (or maybe it was just me that saw that train as a reference) I would highly recommmend this one; a really great lesson." Before it seemed to be a lot more bible-centered, which is something I miss now when I watch their new ones to be honest. I think it's cool that they make spin-offs of old movies but I miss the creativity and just the simple bible stories they once had. That and it seems like veggie tales has become very larry-focused. I like larry but I also love the other characters as well! Despite that, I do see all the effort they put in this DVD. It's really deep, even for a children's dvd and in many ways, relateable for all ages. The silly song with Junior was really funny and overall the dvd was really good with a great message. Their productions seem to be getting better and better, but I'm still missing and yearning for some of the old simple bible messages and having all the characters have a chance at the spotlight."
