You can put another name on it and rename the characters, because this isn't Star Trek. It's not updated Trek, it's not hip Trek, it's not Trek at all.
To quickly sum it up, the character of Captain Kirk would never listen to The Beastie Boys while in bed with two tailed alien females. That will repulse some viewers but, even if you think it's cool and funny, it doesn't fit the character of Captain Kirk. And that's basically the movie in a nutshell. There are countless examples. Uhura fawning over Spock? I don't think so. This is a very expensive fan film homage to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan that missed the mark... the entire target. I know it's made money, and that it's fared well with young audiences, but it ranked dead last among all Star Trek films when rated at The Trek Convention. This caused actor Simon Pegg (plays Scotty in these new films, but best known as the titular character in Shawn of the Dead) to be quoted saying "F--- Y--" to Trekkies. Now that turd is co-writing the upcoming third installment? Predicting this to end as a trilogy.
