Mostly philosophical, Stalker is a visual treat. The opening scenes are probably the most 'textured' works of camera art I have ever seen. One can feel the grit of the world these men originate from, and then travel to the zone, a place of color and beauty. There are really no special effects in the film, and the result is something that falls short of Western film expectations in terms of pacing and excitement. But this is not intended to be a sci-fi thriller, and should not be approached with that mind set. Yes, the movie inspired a genre of books and video games, but many viewers coming from that direction will be disappointed if they are expecting the same. I am genuinely surprised this movie has not been 'remade' for Western audiences, but it's probably better off for it. Few movies can match the bare-bones 'realness' of Stalker.
