Great attention to detail and a clear understanding of how the Vietnam War was fought. Some reviews of this film claim this movie is overtly pro-war - I disagree. I think it shows a balanced and realistic view of both sides, of the men who fought, and of the wives and children left behind. The uselessness of the war and the willingness of government leadership to ignore the advice of their officers is made clear. Overall, this movie is a much more accurate portrayal of Vietnam than anything like Platoon claims to be. Half star lost for Sam Elliot standing upright during heavy crossfire in every scene (I understand he's more of a metaphor for the grizzled master sergeant, but it was heavily overplayed and the most unrealistic part of the film). Otherwise, it's an excellent representation of tactics and strategies during the era.
