Program 9: My Wet Pet Our story begins with an animated opening that introduces the viewer to READ-ALEE-DEED-ALEE (READ) and explains that he is on a journey to a land where people love to read. We ... more »fine READ at home with RADIOLA, BELLE and TOC, singing a song about what it means to be a good friend. When they finish, READ heads off to see Mr. Booker at the newsstand. Mr. Booker is busy setting up a special display with pictures of his customers' pets, which he shows to READ. XTRA pops up with a story for READ that involves the word "pet". It is about an amazing pet cat. Next, READ flies off to the Reading Room and joins a group of children who have gathered to hear some books read: Ned and Fred, My Dog Jet and The Friends of Emily Culpepper. The books feature the sound-spelling patterns and the special concept of friendship. Later, READ heads home. Along the way he encounters signs "in the real world" which he is able to read; for example: "wet paint" and "no turn on red". The program concludes with READ in bed thinking about his day and all he has learned. He falls asleep, a happy and better educated young dragon. Combining animation, puppetry, storytelling, songs and adventures, these programs captivate young viewers and encourage the love of reading.
