Bridget Fonda, Matt Dillon, Kyra Sedgwick and Campbell Scott in an "exuberant romantic comedy" (Rolling Stone) about Seattle twenty-somethings searching for-and running from-love. Bonus: Two outake scenes. Year: 1992

I loved the focus on the early 90s Seattle music scene, and the soundtrack is killer. Was great to catch Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam all in cameos. This is also probably the hottest Matt Dillon has ever been. Anyways the stories and all that are good, good film overall.

I was hopeful about this film, but it was dull, dull, dull all the way. By the halfway point I was rolling my eyes and waiting for it to end. The most interesting parts of the film were the brief cameos from various Seattle musicians and music industry leaders, and these were much too short. Eddie Vedder has more charisma in his 1 minute on screen than the actor playing a rock musician who takes up ten times that much screen time. If Cameron Crowe wanted to create something interesting about Seattle during this heady period in music history, he should have let the musicians just be themselves.
It's also funny that in the universe this movie inhabits, Nirvana apparently doesn't exist. I'm guessing this is because the movie makers contacted Nirvana and Kurt laughed and said "hell no", and good for him, because this movie sucks. It could have been fun as a short, but for a full-length film it nearly put me to sleep. And all the actors look and vibe like '80s hangovers, which again shows that the filmmaker was not "hep" to the happening scene of the time. I did enjoy seeing the beautiful city of Seattle on display throughout the film, so that helps boost my rating slightly.
Uninspiring romances take up center stage while the film teasingly hints at something fascinating going on in the background (the Seattle music scene of the early '90s). Very disappointing.
2/5 stars.

I liked this movie - flash backs to early 90's and all that fun...

"Some might say this movie is a little slow, but I love it. If you are at all interested in bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden or Alice In Chains - you should see this since many of the band members either perform or have cameos. Good balance of funny and dramatic moments. I enjoy the soundtrack for this movie as well."
Still a good movie

"This is what being single is all about. The angst, the desperation. Everybody else has a partner. You somewhat belong but you still don't....
The music is great too. If you like bands like Sound Garden or Perl Jam, this is for you..."

"It is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Although it was made a long time ago, it is still relevant. Campbell Scott and Kyra Sedgwick were excellent in their roles. Their feelings for each other were very touching. Bridget Fonda and Matt Dillon were also good. I'd definitely give it 5 stars. You won't be disappointed."
A Chick Flick For The Guys

"I remember it like it was yesterday. I was 24 years old when this movie came out and living in Miami Florida. I had long hair (real long) and was dating an absolute hottie. So the weekend this movie came out I got dragged to this movie by my girlfriend. Actually it was a group of us, three couples and all the guys pretty much got dragged by their girlfriends. 24 year old, long haired guys into heavy metal music are not the type to enjoy a chick flick, so none of us were thrilled to be there. To make the movie a bit more enjoyable we were in a slightly "altered state." But this little movie won us over! And none of us were single at the time either. I also really related to the character of Matt Dillon because that is exactly how I was living my life at the time.
I can't add anything more than what others have said, as the movie works so well because it's not sappy, it's not forced, it's not cliche, and it's not corny. There was just something so honest and natural about the film. And even though at the time I was seriously pissed off about the advent of grunge music killing off the precious heavy metal I loved so much, I ended up enjoying the music too. This was real grunge, before the music companies turned grunge into top 40 commercialized crap, and before the clothing designers/manufactures turned thrift shop clothing into extremely expensive high-end designer wear. It really sparked my interest in Seattle and I remember wanting to move their for a few years after seeing this movie (never did).
So as my title says, this is a chick flick even the guys will like because it escapes all of the classic trappings of the typical chick flick. The acting and writing are top notch, as is the music and the city of Seattle itself. I have since seen the film in a non-altered state and it has lost none of its charm, originality, and innocence. This movie captures a period in time that was fun, innocent, carefree, fresh, and exciting, before the dot com bubble, before 9/11, before record high gas prices, and before the implosion of our entire economy. Not only do the 20 somethings of today not have a movie like Singles to call their own, they don't have much a future to look forward to either."
