Thomas F. (hardtack) from GAINESVILLE, FL
Reviewed on 7/23/2011...
This is a love story about Australian academics studying a primitive culture on an island near New Guinea just after World War II begins in Europe. A newly married husband and wife anthropologist team travel to a remote island to study the sexual mores of a group of villages where women have higher status then men.

But their marriage begins to come apart when Evelyn realizes that her husband Philip is deliberately misinterpreting their research to further his own academic ambitions. With the help of an American pearl trader named Mick, she travels to another island to conduct her own research. While she is away, disaster strikes when the village women confront Philip who does not understand the cultural mores in the village, and then war with the Japanese breaks out.

All of this affects the relationship between Philip, Evelyn and Mick. What seemed like a wandering tale of conflict between two cultures finally resolves itself into the best part of the movie and a surprise ending.
