Movie Reviews

THE ORIGIN OF THE MAN IN THE SILVER MASK('nuff said)
David M. Goode | Yonkers N.Y. | 09/12/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Any comic book fan worth his salt will tell you that their favorite stories are the ones that features a hero's origin. This film tells the origin of Mexico's greatest pop culture icon...el Santo. The story borrows freely from both the origin tales of the original Captain Marvel and Lee Falk's the Phantom, but features all the elements that we've come to expect from a Santo movie. There are damsels in distress(one of whom is portrayed by Lorena Velazquez) and a supernatural menace that can only be overcome by a masked wrestler. The story moves back and forth from the 16th century and the present(1964)as we watch the original el enmascarado de plata and his descendant battle a master of the black arts and a centuries old curse. The screenplay even features a love story that female viewers will enjoy. But don't worry guys you'll still get all the lucha libre you can handle.Plus el Santo's ancestor is pretty handy with a rapier so we even get a bit of Zorro-like action thrown in here. And to top it off the DVD is subtitled.A must for all collectors of Mexiluchahero movies."

(3 out of 5 stars)

"The film is really better than three stars but not quite four. This is everything one would expect from a quality Santo film; bad acting, dancing routines, goofy supernatural plot twists. The film, which is black and white, lacks the garish splendor of Treasure of Dracula or Contra Momia but succeeds in story pacing.

Satisfying for fans of the genre."
