Lightly enjoyable but a disappointment in the context of author Leslie Charteris's popular character, the Saint--who has been played by several actors, most notably George Sanders--this 1997 film is more in keeping with th... more »e requirements of high-octane contemporary action than it is the requirements of a particular legacy. Val Kilmer plays Simon Templar, the mercenary spy, who is hired to steal a fusion formula but falls in love with the scientist (Elisabeth Shue) who cooked it up. Kilmer's portrayal bears little resemblance to Charteris's rakish hero, and the film itself becomes increasingly improbable and ponderous the longer it goes on. --Tom Keogh« less
Fun suspense action film. There was a bit of a slowdown in the middle but the rest was good. Rest in peace Val Kilmer.

I love this movie! Val Kilmer does a great job in various disguises throughout this rollercoaster ride of a movie.

Such an awful movie! I gave it another chance after 45 minutes, hoping that it would get less abysmal. It didn't.
Even allowing for the conventional suspension of reality that action movies generally require, this one is over the railing and into the bilge. The acting is at the same level.
Only watch this if you are a Val Kilmer fan, an Elizabeth Shue fan, or a masochist.

I wouldn't really rank this movie as being "good" but I enjoyed it. There are definitely moments when I found myself thinking that a particular event never would have occurred (for instance, when law enforcement couldn't figure out that this guy's aliases were ALL names of saints, yet the layperson walked in and immediately pointed this out). Aside from that, the plot is murky and the dialogue often can best be described as ridiculous. Nevertheless, "The Saint" held my attention. I liked the dynamic between Val Kilmer and Elisabeth Shue, and I was looking for light, escapist fun that didn't necessarily have to make much sense.
