Vladimir Mayakovsky, one of Russia's most gifted writers, was the leading poet of the Russian Revolution and the early Soviet Period. Mayakovsky was born on July 19, 1893 in Bagdadi, Georgia, USSR. At the age of 15, Mayakovsky joined the Social-Democratic Workers' Party and was repeatedly jailed for subversive activity. He started to write poetry during solitary confinement in 1909. Upon his release, he joined the Russian Futurist group and soon becamse its leading spokesman. In 1915, Mayakovsky completed two major poems, A Cloud in Trousers (1915) and The BackboneFlute (1916). When the Russian Revolution broke out, he was wholeheartedly for the Bolsheviks. His poems Ode to Revolution (1918) and Left March (1919) became very popular. He poured out propaganda while lecturing and reciting all over Russia. After 1925, he traveled throughout Europe and the U.S. He wrote scripts for motion pictures, as well as two satirical plays, The Bedbug (1929) and The Bathhouse (1930). In 1924, he wrote a 3000-line elegy on the death of Lenin. While in Paris late in 1928, he fell in love with the Russian refugee Tatyana Yakovleva and proposed marriage, but was refused.
