In the tradition of Sixteen Candles, this poignant, tender and very funny film tells the story of Rupert Marshetta (Keanu Reeves, The Matrix), a high school dropout struggling to find himself in a small Pennsylvania town. ... more »An offbeat inventor, Rupert is stuck working in the coal mines with his father (Fred Ward, Short Cuts) and longs for the heart of Carla (Amy Madigan, Field of Dreams), the beautiful and more romantically-experienced owner of the local drive-in. Rupert and Carla cook up a scheme to kidnap his father but run into a snag when Rupert's mother (Bonnie Bedelia, Die Hard) doesn't want her husband back. It's a unique look into the life of one very unusual young man, who has something wonderful to say to all of us.« less

"This is not a great film. It may not even be a very good one, but I have yet to see a performance by Keanu Reeves that I didn't find fascinating. In this oddball dark comedy, which does have some very funny scenes, he is terrific. He also has wonderful chemistry with Amy Madigan and a killer haircut !"

"This movie is quite good. It's a quirky piece (not always a mainstream man is our Mr Reeves) and Keanu shows promise for his comedic turns in later films. The storyline may not be an armchair thriller, but it works. Dysfunctional family, odd romance, kidnap (no ransom)spiked coffee.Keanu shows his youthful exuberance again as the misfit teen with a special gift for mechanical stuff and scheming. It's no blockbuster, but it conveys small town life well and that everyone's business IS everyone's business. The only escape is to get outta there.Love the hairdo Ke!"

"This is a nice story about a coming of age young man who isplayed by Keanu Reeves as Rupert. You follow Rupert through a part of his teen age life with friends a nd family, and all the happiness and problems life has to offer in a small Pennsylva nia town. I did like this movie and don't forget the twist in the movie plot!On a personal note this movie was filmed in and around the Pittsburgh,PA area. I even ha d the privilege to be one of the movie extra's in the coal mining scenes. Only four of the seven scenes I was in made the movie but it was great to meet and work with Keanu, Fred, Bonnie and the funniest person I know Amy Madigan."
Young wacky and crazy Keanu

"An offbeat film with offbeat characters. Keanu is fun but the older woman he has an affair with was definitely miscast. There is no believability in the chemical attraction there. Keanu kidnaps his Dad for money but his plan backfires. The whole family is offbeat and a little wacky. Watch only if you're a Keanu fan.

Not a great film, but Keanu Reeves is always fun to see!

"I thought this was really cute movie. Keanu plays a young man having an affair with an older woman. I thought their relationship was very sweet. The odd couple kidnap Keanu's Dad for the ransom money...except his Mom doesn't want the Dad back because she is having an affair! This is really an offbeat kind of film, which is what makes it so enjoyable. Nothing spectacular, but worth the effort. Extra bonus if you are a Keanu fan. He looks adorable in it!"
