The town of Hamelin has entered a competition in order to win the King's recognition. To achieve this, the Mayor (Claude Rains) proclaims that all the people must work harder and longer, to the point that children are denied play and school time. But when their town is invaded by rats from a neighboring city that has been flooded out and denied help by the Mayor, Hamelin's only recourse is to hire the Pied Piper (Van Johnson) to rid the town of the offensive rats. When the greedy Mayor tries to trick the Pied Piper out of the money due him, the Pied Piper makes up some rules of his own to the dismay of the townspeople! Van Johnson ...
