Movie Reviews

Film footage of Panzer III
Michael Foncannon | Somerset, KY | 06/08/2007
(3 out of 5 stars)

"So far, I have two of these dvd's. Recommended with caveat for true tank geeks.

Like the other dvd's in this series, it is made up of contemporary films, mostly German newsreels, that captured the vehicle during it's production and service.

A very dry British narrator tries to tie everything together by giving a history of the campaigns that the vehicle participated in, some general statistics on numbers built, major differences in armament, etc.

All footage is in black and white. No CGI stuff here. Narrator expects some base knowledge from audience.

As an example, while the different Panzer III main guns were talked about by the narrator, there was no visual side by side comparison or accompanying shots of the turret weaponry, so that a beginner could tell them apart.

For those looking for detail shots and extended "walk around" type shots, skip this one. Except for a few factory shots, all of these tanks are filmed moving and covered in mud, dust, gear, etc.

However, for those knowledgeable about the tank and looking for good "in action" footage or ideas for model vignettes; this is your huckleberry.

Wealth of information

"Much information here. Very interesting for anyone interested in German WW2 armour. It would be nice to see the 60 year old footage updated for CD though."
