This is a very controverisal film for the 5,000 or so Ramapoughs who live in Ringwood, on or around Stag Hill in Mahwah and just over the state line in Hillburn, N.Y. Injury and insult continues to mount, and not just from the film industry. The tribe remains the subject of mystery and mythology, most not good. "Everything we see about this community is extremely defamatory and unflattering," said Lydia Cotz, an attorney who represented members of the tribe in a defamation lawsuit last year against the makers of "Out of the Furnace." (The case was dismissed.) The the surname DeGroat is a common surname employed by a character in the film. It is due to the controversy and the interesting history of the Ramapough that I watched this film. It is among my keepers, as is the Red Road series, another film effort based on these people. Watching the film, there is no inkling that the characters are based on native people. It's another action film with great actors based on someone's questionable truth.

MMA fans unite! If you like a true-life story and lots of brutality, this movie is for you. Some big name stars in this and they all have outstanding performances. I felt like I was right there in the street with these guys.

Pretty gritty but likely based on real life situations. Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck and Forest Whitaker shine in this but not necessarily in a light that you will like. A must for gritty fans!
