A movie about rich high school students' concerns, but targeted at a 6-9th grade audience. Black's antics are mostly cliche and slapstick - but he is good at that kind of thing and performs well here in that vein. Chevy Chase appears prominently in the credits, yet has 2-3 lines, only one of which is a joke and he is done in under a minute. Harold Ramis is not really funny at all, which is a shame. Catherine O'Hara does well with what she is given. The plot, such that it is, is the 'worst day ever' plot, but in order to sympathize with the main character, you'd need to be really psyched at the idea of getting accepted to Yale in order to be a writer(?). I just kept wondering 'why does he need to go to Yale to write?', which is a question he arrives at himself an hour and a half later. I guess I just missed out on the 'buy-in' from the outset.

This movie is one of those that will appeal to some and not to others. I personally found it hilarious and quote lines from it all the time, like this one from stoner brother Lance (Jack Black)-"I didn't go to college and check me out. I'm kick a--!"-- Or this one from mom (Catherine O'Hara) -- " I look like a piƱata." when she's trying to squeeze into a too-tight dress all while slugging down a drink. Maybe not for everyone, but this is one of my personal favorites. Your mileage may vary.

Lots of stars you know in this. Pretty quirky plotline!

While this movie may have looked as though it would easily be hilarious from the trailers, it was utterly disappointing - one of those where every funny part of the movie is in the trailer and the rest is, well, not. I wasn't even totally sure whether it was written to be a comedy or whether it was written to be a drama with a few low-brow jokes here and there. I must say that those who made the previews at least did there job well. As for Jack Black though, a comedian who has done great work, this was probably his worst.
