"I saw this movies years ago and I had to own it on DVD for myself. Is a story about Orodoto Balbuena who comes from the Dominican Republic to New York to find the American Dream. Only that is not what he'd hope for. The only thing good about coming to New York was meeting Nancy Martinez(His girlfriend).
There is a valuable lesson from the film about today's kids than the ones back home. I don't want to give the movie away but see this movie and you'll fall in love with Balbuena. There is a sequel "Nueva Yol 3" and I wasn't too crazy about it because they continued the movie picking up where they left off from NY... when the the first movie had a wonderful happy ending at DR. But still see it because of the great humor."
DATED and UNFUNNY; MISSED OPPORTUNITY

"I bought this Dominican Republic film after seeing Janky Panky (which I reviewed here and gave it 5 stars) thinking it would be another comedy gem. Boy was I wrong.
Maybe this film was a hit in 1995 when it came out in the DR but in reality, it doesn't hold up. (The film is spun from a character that was developed for a noon TV show comedy segment in D.R. television)
There are many opportunities missed to make it even "averagely" funny-- you know, the immigrant newcomer lost in the big city. This is the problem when you have one person producing, writing, acting and composing part of the film score -- unless you're truly genius, you end up with mediocre results.
The audio in the film is barely audible. I'm fluent in Spanish and I had to turn on the English subtitles to understand what was being said.
Production values are low, probably filmed in 16mm as opposed to 35mm.
The plot drags through the first and second acts, and then in a few rushed scenes, as if the production was running out of film stock, the whole thing is (un-satisfyingly) resolved.
The boxed set also comes with a sequel, which I'm dreading to watch.
My guess is that if you're from the D.R. and have nostalgia for the Balbuena character, knock yourself out. If you want to have a good time and enjoy quality film making, get Janky Panky."
