Set against the romantic desolation of Detroit and Tangiers, an underground musician, deeply depressed by the direction of human activities, reunites with his resilient and enigmatic lover. Their love story has already endured several centuries at least, but their debauched idyll is soon disrupted by her wild and uncontrollable younger sister. Can these wise but fragile outsiders continue to survive as the modern world collapses around them?

A truly thoughtful film seems to be a rare things these days, with all the explosions and monsters and unnecessary CG being tossed around. This is just such a film. I don't think I've seen a vampire movie before with quite such an appreciation for life as is evident in this one. The vampire protagonists are the most lifelike and vibrant characters in a wasteland of necrophilic humanity intent on destroying itself and all life on the planet.

This is a mournful movie, one that eulogises the human race as it rushes headlong towards global catastrophe, and gently reminds viewers why it might, just possibly, be a good idea to put on the brakes. There is infinite wonder in the universe, but even immortal vampires will not have the chance to see it all if their mortal hosts poison themselves and everything else to death. The faint note of hope in this story keeps it from being too much of a downer, at least personally. It is clear that someone who is truly enamoured of the planet and its varied residents created this piece, in stark contrast to all the death-fetishism going on pretty much uniformly elsewhere in media.

See this film if you share a tired, but undying, sense of wonder with the vampires, the filmmaker, and me. Five stars.
