Well, love blossoms all sorts of places. Even amidst the daily drunken despair of the destitute. And there is a very gritty portrayal of the homeless here, living right smack in the middle of bright and beautiful Paris. Indeed, I would have been surprised to see a movie like this come from anywhere other than France, as they inhabit a completely foreign stomping ground of existence. Their metaphysical plane seems to have an intensely direct link to human nature and it's manner of expression. Watch "The Tunnel" on Amazon Prime. This illustrates the cultural differences well.
There are many magical sequences in this film, pandering to extreme high and low fugue-like states. Some of these sequences end up being quite terrifying too. Slowly, we see these two lovers embroider a mesh of life experiences until they are inseparable, even when separated by years.
At film's conclusion I found myself pondering things for quite some time. I was really left with the overall feeling that these two characters were horrifically flawed and probably needed years of therapy. I certainly couldn't tap dance over this aspect. If the film had gone on, I could imagine these two being plagued by the same type of mistakes over and over.
