When psychotherapy provides little relief, she decides to retreat from society completely, buying a rundown cabin on a remote mountaintop, and sequestering herself away from all human contact. She soon finds that she is ill-equipped for the rugged lifestyle necessary for survival in the breathtakingly beautiful but unrelentingly harsh environment she has chosen to live in. By the time winter arrives, she is low on supplies and even lower on hope. When Miguel, a passing hunter, checks the cabin after noticing the chimney is no longer putting out smoke, he finds Edee curled up on the floor, hypothermic and barely clinging to life.
