Movie Reviews

Little style, less substance.
John Cobb | Austin, TX | 02/13/2000

"A made-for-TV "Thomas Crown Affair (1968)" tries hard to duplicate the Steve McQueen-Faye Dunaway chemistry, using Donald Sutherland and Jennifer O'Neill in this watery version.Role reversal sets O'Neill as the wealthy jewel thief, hunted seductively by insurance investigator Sutherland..who works most of the film in shirts open to the navel...Ahh, the 70's! O'Neill is beautiful and stylish, drives fast cars, swims unclothed and stays away from complex sentences, while Sutherland smokes those little thin cigars and from time to time falls back on his `Hawkeye' grin. There is a nice turn by Jon Cypher as the heavy. Soap opera vet Eric Braeden gets some on-screen time as does, of all people Robert Duvall as the straight-arrow cop.Fun for a lark. Connoisseurs of the genre only please."

"VCI's budget DVD starts out well enough for the obscure thriller Lady Ice, with nice letterboxed credits foreshadowing interesting widescreen photography to come. Unfortunately, as soon as the credits end, the aspect ratio changes to full screen and the rest of the film is presented in one of the worst pan and scan jobs I've ever seen on DVD. Pass on this one from VCI, and hopefully down the line there will be a new widescreen transfer so we can see how the film is supposed to look after the credits."
Jennifer O'Neill was great

"This movie hit the theaters in Miami Florida on July 13 1973 starring the gorgeous Jennifer O'Neill as Paula Booth, Donald Sutherland as Andy Hammon the Insurance Investigator, and Patrick Magee as Paul Booth the father of Paula Booth. This movie is about Paul and Paula Booth (father and daughter) being major jewel thieves. There's this big fat guy who arrives from Chicago in Miami with a necklace worth 5 millions in diamond alone. Therefore, Andy shows up at this guys hotel room and takes the diamond necklace after he makes the big fat guy take his clothes of and hand cuffs him to the toilet. Now Andy is the insurance investigator that got a job as a mechanic working for Paul Booth. One day Paula brings her car in stating the timing belt was off, the brakes were squeaking and she wanted the oil change and wash after you're done. Andy tells Paula to go screw you and she tells him you would like to. Therefore, Paula goes and tells daddy and daddy calls Andy into his office only to fire him. This piss off Andy and he takes Paula car for a car ride before baling out of it some 25 miles away. Now Andy keeping his eyes on Paula and his hands off now trying to figure out what her and her daddy is going to do. You see Paula the major jewel thief gets big priceless jewelry and has them redesigned into something that she likes. That leads to some questions that need to be answered. Does Paula get the necklace that she has wanted for years? Does Andy get the Paula, the jewels, or neither? Paul wants Paula to get out of the business, does she and when? Here are some of my thoughts on this movie. I like the picture but I thought it could've used more action. The moving around the jewels from one person to another made it hard to keep your interested. You didn't know who was the good guys and who were the bad guys. I bought this move because off Jennifer O'Neill and I wasn't disappointed at all. Jennifer is a very talented actress and in this movie some what of a tease. She was just down right gorgeous when swimming in here birthday suit. She also looked great in the bikini she wore. The only reason I'm giving this movie 10 weasel stars is because of Jennifer. Jennifer made this film worth watching and without her, the film is nothing."
