K-9 aired 2009-2010 and is one of several Doctor Who spin-offs. Ran for 26 half hour episodes. Filmed in Australia for Disney. Not a BBC production and so was not able to directly reference events or characters in Doctor Who, though it makes clever attempts to. This show took over a decade to get off the ground, and was definitely a labor of love. K-9 is here voiced by the original actor John Leeson.
This is the Mark I version of K-9 (there's four of them) which was created by Bob Baker and Dave Martin in 1977 as a companion for fourth Doctor Tom Baker in the episode "The Invisible Enemy". Dave Martin's own dog had been recently run over by a car, and K9 was a car-proof tribute to it. The initial idea for realizing K-9 was to use a small actor inside a robotic Dobermann costume. This concept was rejected, thankfully.
K-9 is smart Scifi for smart kids and adults. Personally, I enjoyed this show, found it quite amusing, and well scripted. K-9 has a different look and his personality has been modified a bit. You'll have to watch the show to find out why this is. There is a film entitled "K-9: TimeQuake" which was slated for release in 2017 (K-9’s fortieth anniversary). It pits K-9 against ancient founding Timelord Omega. Unfortunately it has been delayed till 2018 at the earliest. Possibly lost in production hell.
