Sound is mono, so it has an older, duller sound to it, but when my kids were kindergarten and younger, they really enjoyed it. It is a sweet story and it tells it with less extrenuous add-on's that Disney often does. How close is it to the original story? I'm not sure, but I think its closer than Disney b/c of details that was absent from Disney's, and because the setting matched some of the human characters that were there.

"This is an incredibly bad production of the familiar jungle book story. It is not the Disney production of the same name, although the story is more or less the same. Animation, drawings, story and all other production are of such low quality, that it does not even deserve a single star (The single star is because otherwise the review cannot be posted).Do not under any circumstances buy this DVD."

"This is a ridiculous version of the original. In my haste to actually find a copy of the real Jungle Book I purchased this. Be forewarned...DO NOT BUY.

Someone actually read the book!

"For anyone who appreciates when classic literature is read and respected, this version is for you. This version, unlike most other versions, actually follows the book. And, in my opinion, that more than makes up for some of the movie's shortcoming of having been obviously low-budget. I have since purchased other children's classics from these producers and have yet to be disappointed. While they may not have the huge budget to have perfect production quality, they respect and adhere to the story as it was written -- something I believe my children will thank me for someday."
Not a patch on the Disney movie

"I bought this tape for my three year old thinking thatthis was the Disney version. Big mistake. The animation is not even close to the Disney standard, and the storyline lacks the polish of a Disney production. None of the little touches of comedy that children love exist in this fairly mediocre recreation of Kipling
s classic. That being said, it is perhaps slightly closer to Kipling's version when compared to Disney. But then, if you are buying an animated cartoon for your child, I doubt if the focus should be on the original literary version!"
