"The 1970 TV version of "Jane Eyre" is one of my favorites, not the least of which for John Williams' early and exceedingly haunting score.
There are at least seven different DVD packages of this film on Amazon. As a test, I ordered seven of them. Although they have not all arrived, the ones that have without a doubt all outshine the Collector's Choice version by far. "Digitally remastered" is proclaimed on the box but it is a lie. The print appears to be third generation at best and the sound is muddy. My rating, however, refers to the fact that several scenes are included in the other (and more watchable) versions I've received. I estimate that about 10 minutes has been excised from the print. Judging from all the varied releases on many labels out there, my guess is that this is somehow in public domain. I highly recommend "Jane Eyre" on DVD -- except for this one! I'm using it as mini-Frisbee for polishing up my dog's catching ability."
I love the movie but not his DVD

"If this is the same one that I got from Barnes and Nobles, and I don't doubt that it is", do not waste your money. I returned it because the quality was horrible. I love this version with GC Scott but there are scenes missing, the audio skips and cuts out and the video looks like it's being taken off of a worn out 8MM. Lines down the sides at times, jumping around and just plain horrible picture. The supplier should be ashamed."

"I read Jane Eyre as a child and saw the version on TV--with George C Scott. There was a pssage in the book that confused me, and I was a little surprised that it was used almost word for word in the movie. However, it in not in this edition. I very distinctly remember George C Scott asking Jane if she thought him handsome and when she says no, he stands up and puts a hand on the fireplace and is in profile, then he faces forward still standing---this is where this version of the movie starts that scene and it is very poorly edited at that. I timed the movie and it lasted the 110 minutes promised. This (are there others?) missing part was only 15 ---30 seconds.
However George C Scott is a perfect Mr. Ro.. and the scenes after the non-wedding and before Jane leaves are heartwrenching. The scenery and Thornefield Hall must have been absolutly gorgeous when shot, because sometimes they are breathtaking even in this poorly restored version. The music track is awful, but the voices are clear. The film is too dark. It almost adds to the despondancy in the orphanage scenes, but it too often where the faces cannot be seen.
It was, and hopefully will be again, an excellent depiction of the classic."
I Hope This DVD Will Do The Movie Justice!

"I see that a new DVD for the George C. Scott version of Jane Eyre is being released on October 25, 2005. So far all of the other DVD's for the Jane Eyre movie starring Suzannah York and George C. Scott have been crappy public domain copys and they have been edited and have had at least 10 to 20 minutes missing from the movie so hopefully this new DVD will have better picture quality will restore the movie to it's original length! But seeing as the DVD is priced cheaply at $4.99 it will probably be another cheaply made public domain quality DVD!"
I still love this version!

"I have seen many versions of Jane Eyre and own a few, but this is still one of my favorites. The musical scores are wonderful. George C. Scott is just as I would imagine Mr. Rochester (Timothy Dalton-although I do love that version too-seems far to Hollywood handsome IMO). Susannah York may seem a bit old, but plays the role of Jane wonderfully! I seem to return to this version because of the scenes at Lo wood when Jane was a child. Other movies I have seen seem to portray that as such a nice cheerful place and I don't see it as such. In this movie, the place looks like a charitable institution and the girls are treated like charity cases. Yes I have read the book and if I want the story to read exactly like the book-I'll just read the book again! I gave this a 4 because there are pieces missing from this dvd-wonder why that is?. The quality of the dvd is poor, but no worse than the vhs which I own and have watched to death."
