Movie Reviews

The Bible as it was meant to be read.

"Alexander Scourby is simply amazing! He reads the Bible with an understanding of the Bible that is revealed in his inflection and proper emphasis. I have only caught a couple of minor errors in his reading and I have been through the entire Bible several times with him on tapes and this DVD.

This is great for reading the Bible with others. You can of course pause at anytime to discuss a passage, yet it makes it easy to get through a whole book so that you can get the meaning in the context of that whole book.

I have another DVD Bible and there is no comparison. The mistakes in the other DVD reading are numerous and the reading often shows an utter lack of understanding of what is being read. It has background music that can make it hard to hear the narration at times, especially for the hearing impaired. Also the use of unconventional pronunciations in that version may leave you wondering who some of the people are, where some of the places are and is this the same KJV you know?

I agree to an extent with another reviewer that the navigation could be easier but this is a video DVD not computer software. I would not expect to be able to cut down a giant oak with a coping saw. You can go directly to any chapter but for the Book of Psalms etc. you will have to go through many steps to get to the higher numbered chapters. There is some very good software out there of which I have tried several and the downloadable Online Bible is by far my favorite. Having this open on your laptop while viewing the DVD can be a good compliment to your studies as you can look things up and compare passages very quickly and easily, but is not necessary to a fruitful study.

I cannot recommend this product enough. I imagine they will improve upon it in the future but for now it is, in my humble opinion, the best choice and money well spent.

Just A Suggestion for Buyers...

"I am posting this comment in response to some of the "negative" reviews given here. :) Before deciding to purchase any Bible on DVD product, do a bit of careful reading and research first to understand the versions and features available. There really is a wide variety of these items, and no doubt each one offers its targeted audiences what they need. My recommendation: If the version on this page captures your interest, please check out the Bibles on DVD: Alexander Scourby - King James Version SIGNATURE Edition (2008) before you make your final choice. The Signature version seems to offer some features (like dramatic Bible story reading) that some reviewers had said were lacking and / or imperfect in this standard version. The Signature Version includes a 52 Week Study Guide, a cool Q&A game, 33 dramatized Bible stories beyond the strict narration of the text, and a Holy Land Photo Tour. When purchasing a DVD product, MY CHOICE: I actually selected the Signature Version over the product listed on this page because of the less than enthusiastic reviews below and because the features on the Signature Version appealed to our product wants. So, I was very satisfied with the Signature version. // If you are interested in investigating these products, there is a great website that discusses the variety of these Bible on DVD product. For the product mentioned on this page, please visit the following page to see some helpful info: [...]: Apparently some folks prefer strict narration of the biblical text without all the sound effects, and some folks prefer a more robust audio experience that is rendered with many voices and sound coloring. Each individual has to decide for himself / herself which type of Bible version he / she prefers, and then read carefully on Amazon to determine if the products match one's personal expectations.

I have not experienced the standard product on this page personally; as I said, I reacted to the reviews and to the increase feature of the other product, thus finally selecting the Signature version. Nevertheless, as I must offer a rating for the given product, I gave it four stars because I believe that it would be an appropriate product for its own target audience, those who are interested in the following, features as mention in the product's description: *No Music -- a voice-only narration of the King James Version. // *Complete narration of the New and Old Testaments. Hope this post helps people as they navigate their ways through the myriad of choices. :)"
Expected more options...

"This is basically a put into DVD player, turn on and play with options only to play entire book, or play entire chapter. I expected it to be able to navigate through chapters with more ease and for it to have more interactive features.

For the narration, it gets 5 stars. I purchased because of Alexander Scourby's voice, my parents had the cassette tapes for ages and I always popped one in when I wanted to take a break from reading. His voice made "reading" the Bible a lot more interesting."
The best you can find of it's type!

"This product is the best of it's type that you can get today. If you want the King James Version (even if you prefer others) and if you adore the voice of Alexander Scourby, then you will be very enriched with this product. It is not perfect, but it does an excellent job of going through the text of the Bible with understanding and clairty.

It is NOT software so don't expect it to behave like software. I love the fact that I can have it on as I am doing other work and pop my head in now and then to review the text whilst it is being read. Scourby has such wonderful inflections that it is easy to be drawn to pay attention.

One thing you will note in this DVD series: The voice will be speeded up from time to time as is the practice to fit audio into limited space. It can also be slowed down to streach and fit where needed. This doesn't really impeed the listening but is noticable.

Mostly of all ... Enjoy it and be blessed!"
