Hinterland is filmed in small coastal towns in Whales. I have no problem "hearing" some of the dialects. The way it's filmed has a rather somber tone - from the landscape to the actors' demeanors. No one ever smiles. Then again it's a "noir crime drama." Each disc is one episode/homicide case, like a 1hr 40min movie. Storylines as each homicide is investigated are very different and have unexpected twist/endings which I really like. All 3 series (seasons) were very popular on Netflix + globally. As of May22, fans are still expecting a final/4th season. Btw, the lead is Richard Harrington, the actor who played Captn Blamey on Poldark.

Exclusively Welsh series, complete with the sing-song language, long hilly roads and hills with nothing for miles on end, constant winds and downpour, and silent, lonely folk. Folks left on their own for far too long, till the pressure cooker of their lives causes neurotic distortion in their pathway. Quite a bit of blood in some of these episodes. And they all kept me guessing. Quite good, with lots of desolate but beautiful scenery. There are 2 other seasons which only appear to be available in Region 2 dvd. Although, I think I read that Netflix has them available too.
This show reminded me of a little tidbit I was reading recently about a story popularized in the 16th century which claimed that the first European to see America was the Welsh prince Madoc in 1170, over three hundred years before Christopher Columbus's voyage in 1492. A son of Owain Gwynedd, prince of Gwynedd, he had supposedly fled his country during a succession crisis with a troop of colonists and sailed west. He eventually landed near the Mississippi River and founded a colony, which later mingled with the Native Americans, and that supposedly their Welsh-speaking descendants still live somewhere in the United States.
