"The King of B-Westerns & Serials...VCI Entertainment ~ Guns
J. Lovins | Missouri-USA | 04/14/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)
"VCI Entertainment presents "Guns and Guts" (1974) (Dolby digitally remastered)...Under director Rene Cardona Jr...the cast include Jorge Rivero (El Pistolero), Pedro Armendriz Jr. (Esposo abandonado), Rogelio Guerra (Prisionero escapado), Zulma Faiad (Chiquita), Quintin Bulnes (Sherriff), Rene Cardona (Monje),Chano Urueta (Fray Jose), Jos? Antonio Mena, Rebeca Silva (Prostituta), Letcia Robles (Prostituta), Diana Selga(Prostituta), Susana Polga (Prostituta),Gladys Vivas (Esposa infiel), Enrique Ponton (Jugador) ----- our story involves gunslinger Jorge Rivero and two escapees Pedro Armendariz Jr and Rogelio Guerra who have a date with destiny in killing a corrupt sheriff Quintin Bulnes...great direction from Rene Cardona Jr. who takes a Mexican cast and turns it into a bloody spaghetti western...can our trio take on the sheriff and his band of legionaires who hold up in a fortified monastery with gattling guns...watch for the fisticuffs between two of the trio as they want the same heroine Zulma Faiad...the shoot out is reminscient of "The Wild Bunch" with no stone unturned when it comes to lead...some tense slow motion scenes as the good guys take out the badmen while never running out of bullets or reloading, great stuff though ----- there is a great deal of entertainment for the serious "film-buff"...all courtesy of VCI Entertainment, who in my humble opinion is the best there is in restoring early serials and features like this one.

Pierce, screenplay by Earl E. Smith...the cast include Paul Koslo (Othar Pruitt), Dennis Fimple (Dewey Crenshaw), Slim Pickens (Grandpa Pruitt), Jaclyn Smith (Sally Fannie Tatum)...our story has to do with "Moonshine", running homemade whiskey in the Ozark Mountains...watch the scene with newcomer Jaclyn Smith as she shoots a snake just before skinny-dipping in a mountain stream...Smith turns the tide on Paul Koslo and Dennis Fimple when she steals their cloths at the local swimming hole...funny cues at the general store with some of the oldtimer locals...exciting car chases from the sheriff and their rivals in selling their liquor...the film was renamed "Bootlegger's Angel" because of Jaclyn Smith the star of the TV Show "Charlie's Angels" in which she appeared...much in the same time period as "O Brother Where Art Thou?" from the Coen Brothers many nostalgic settings...the story lines are excellent with outstanding action scenes and production with over an hours worth of entertainment
