5/5 Rating - Glory - I had no idea that this movie (Winner of Three Academy Awards - Best Supporting Actor, Cinematography and Sound) was such a jewel and tell an incredible based on our America history story with Matthew Broderick, Cary Elwes, Morgan Freeman and others leading the way. A must watch! Movie ReviewsSuperior American Revolution / Civil War double feature Annie Van Auken | Planet Earth | 06/01/2010 (5 out of 5 stars) "In this pairing of motion pictures, Mel Gibson plays a character loosely based on Francis 'Swamp Fox' Marion of South Carolina and Matthew Broderick is Col. Robert Gould Shaw, commander of the 54th Massachusetts, the very first all-black regiment to be authorized after the announcement of Pres. Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.
Based in part on Col. Shaw's correspondence, GLORY works best when depicting tensions within the regiment between black soldiers and their white superiors, when showing day-to-day strife among the men themselves, and in illustrating their anger at being assigned drudge work rather than fighting duty. The several battle scenes are most effective, especially a climactic Fort Wagner assault that decimated the 54th. THE PATRIOT is a unique combination of gory violence, touching family situations, the private anguish of a guilt-ridden mind and the shared, often-black humor of comrades in arms who undergo the severest tests of their courage. The devastating effects of war upon a civilian population is also integral to the story. All such films have a memorable villain, this being no exception. Evil British Col. Tavington (Isaacs) targets non-combatants, wreaking havoc until Gibson's "Ghost" finally meets him on the battlefield. These are excellent examples of top-of-the-line cinema. It's a two-fer that belongs in the home libraries of all who are interested in military or American history, also any fan of superior action movies. HIGHEST recommendation!
