After carefree teenager Jay (Maika Monroe) sleeps with her new boyfriend, Hugh (Jake Weary), for the first time, she learns that she is the latest recipient of a fatal curse that is passed from victim to victim via sexual intercourse. Death, Jay learns, will creep inexorably toward her as either a friend or a stranger. Jay's friends don't believe her seemingly paranoid ravings, until they too begin to see the phantom assassins and band together to help her flee or defend herself.

A genuinely creepy movie that focuses more on concept than explanation. Evaluated directly, there are some minor plot inconsistencies, but these can be easily overlooked since there are layers of metaphor involved, and these metaphors are well-constructed in the scenes chosen by the director. Note how much of the technology shown in the film is decades old (take the televisions for example), except for the girl with her clam shell smart phone (pdf reader?). The "monster-transfer" idea has every opportunity to turn the film into a all-out sleaze-fest, but it doesn't fortunately. The actors chosen and the scene locations are very credible and realistic. Definitely a horror movie that will have everyone talking about "what they would do" if faced with the same situation, but certainly no easy answers.
