Well, it's fun seeing Patrick Troughton try to distance himself from his former Doctor Who role by playing an insane madman here. And rather amusing in itself, seeing the Brits take on Aztec/Toltec history (or pre-Columbian Mexico.) Really though, this is more based on the Nazca people of Peru. The Mayan god, Kukulcan, was something they really worshipped, and The Feathered Serpent (Quetzalcoatl) is a religious cult. The Aztecs defeated the Toltecs yet considered them predecessors and claimed the Toltec gods and spiritual rites. So, kind of a strange infusion of facts, and haphazardly historically informative.
Intrigue, coups, pagan worship, murder, suspense, political deception, personal greed, religious followings, and what might be considered the occult is what you'll find here. Filmed by ITV (the Beeb's main competition back then), this is two seasons which aired from 1976 to 1978. As most British channels were still utilizing then expensive Video Tape to film shows, this has a Video Camera feel to it. There's a handy documentary on Disc 2 which might you might find useful watching beforehand, as it explains the actual history this series is based on.
