Conductor: Simon JolyGiuseppe Gazzaniga has earned a place in history as one of the forerunners of Rossini and is best known for his one-act Don Giovanni Tenorio (1786), written in the opera buffa mould and one of his most successful works. It is the story of Don Juan, the practical joker who finds the seduction of women the best joke of all. First performed in Venice in 1787, it was well received and was subsequently performed in many major cities of Europe. Gazzaniga's librettist, Bertati, had studied many of the 18th century Don Juan plays, and from them incorporated several elements, especially from the version by Molière as well as features of the story found in popular tradition. Gazzaniga's Don Giovanni Tenorio introduces four female victims : Donna Anna (who is to be found in Tirso's Spanish setting of the play), Donna Elvira and Maturina (from the version by Molière) and Donna Ximena. The conductor, Simon Joly, says of this production, Gazzaniga's one-act Don Giovanni Tenorio was a great hit in its day, and was seen in Venice, Paris, Lisbon and London between 1787 and 1794. Mozart's librettist Da Ponte was clearly familiar with it, but scholars aren't sure whether Mozart knew it or not if he didn t, the similarities are all the more remarkable. I hope we manage to capture its blend of wit, humor and drama. There are first-rate virtuoso arias and some very exciting ensembles as the Don misbehaves himself enough to be carried off to hell SUNG IN ITALIANWEXING LYRICAL Some Days and Nights at the OperaThis documentary film sets out to capture some of the ingredients that go to make the Wexford Festival a unique blend of music and fun a potent cocktail of high art and even higher jinks!
