Moving with the migration are predators of all shapes & sizes culling the weak. January to March is calving season, a time when the rains come bringing with them green nourishing grasses for the several hundred thousand calves born each year. Within just a few minutes of birth, a calf will be on it's feet and on the move, seeking it's mothers udder. The mother may move away at this point which will encourage the calf to follow closely.
