Dick Tracy Detective
1945 / B & W / 61 minutes
Solid noir b-movie, instead of the comic strip buffoonery and puns and visual tricks that I was expecting. Tracy (Morgan Conway) is called in after crazed killer with a surgical knife claims his third victim. During the investigation Tracy deals with a spirit faker cum astrologer and creepy undertaker named Deathbridge (hey, I didn’t say it was totally free of puns). The obligatory kid for us guys to identify with actually plays an important part in the story. Poised Anne Jeffreys, as Tess Trueheart, is a vivacious redhead in this outing. Her patience with Tracy’s standing her up for dinner all the time proves that the way to woman’s heart is to take her for granted (ah, the lessons I learned from Hollywood). The gruesome violence approaches over the top. The killings are quite grisly -- lending the movie a horror movie-like atmosphere -- and a couple of rocking fist fights are included, as is a guy crashing through a skylight. Well worth watching.
