Recorded in December 1999 before a massive and wildly enthusiastic French audience, this Cranberries concert is remarkable testimony to the Irish band's seasoning, evolving confidence, and heightened sense of fun in the ... more »years since the release of their breakthrough hit singles ("Linger," "Zombie," "Ode to My Family," all performed here). Fans who saw the Limerick-born group's early- '90s tours recognized in singer-songwriter Dolores O'Riordan equal parts gamine, witch, and an inspirational incarnation of W.B. Yeats's Glimmering Girl. Now, however, Beneath the Skin: Live in Paris underscores O'Riordan's more relaxed, womanly stage presence, as well as a rounder, fuller sound from founding members Mike Hogan (bass), his brother Noel Hogan (guitar), and drummer Fergal Lawler. Strutting at various times in a flowing robe, leather mini-skirt, or white pants, the diminutive O'Riordan leads the Cranberries through an overview of their Celtic-tinged, alternately jangly or thrashing repertoire. As always, they're at their best when they reach beyond O'Riordan's tendencies toward lyrical self-congratulation. When they don't, a bit of monotony fogs up the proceedings. When they do, however, which is frequently in Beneath the Skin, the Cranberries demonstrate exquisite pop craftsmanship ("Just My Imagination," not to be confused with the Temptations' classic) and ferocity of spirit ("Animal Instinct"). In any case, the passionate Parisian audience at this show amplifies the band's thorny glories while, paradoxically, easing them into a comfortable encounter with stardom. All in all, this is a must for Cranberries fans and a multifaceted introduction to the group for everyone else. --Tom Keogh« less

"This is the re-authored version of the DVD, as ordered by the Cranberries themselves. The original version had some problems involving the editing - it was extremely difficult to navigate, etc.
About the performance - it rocks as usual! It is completely live, with absolutely no lip-synching or overdubs. Dolores and the guys are in their best form. Includes all the big hits - Dreams, Linger, Zombie, Salvation, etc.; and a lot of tracks from "Bury the Hatchet." The highlights come at the end, when they perform the beautiful "You and Me" beneath a shower of rose petals with stained-glass window lighting effects, and "Just My Imagination" in front of a sea of twinkling white lights. The band is totally into it, and they play a PERFECT show!"

"With her uniquely sweeet vocal artistry, Dolores O'Riordan dazzlingly shines like ever melodious Irish Rock diamond (If you think there is no such thing, think The Corrs, U2, Sinead O'Connor, Lord of the Dance.., just to name a few...) audio-visually in this rare live concert in Paris, latest as of 2004. "I had the opportunity to witness The Cranberries in concert twice and I must sy they sure know how to rock. The band's chrisma and showmanship are tight and the on-set production is great. This DVD serves to capture the wonderful moments of their 1999 Paris tour on film. The audience was boisterous and the band rocked hella good. The DVD comes with a lot of features from the good old past and three videos from Htachet, and the navigation is much improved over the frustrating navigation in the 1st issue. The newly authored edition with 2 more videos from Wake Up...Coffee plus a simplified and user-freindly navigation menu would be out! It is much worth it."

"Never been all that much of a Cranberries fan,but I had the chance to check out this DVD,so I thought...what the heck!'Beneath...' features an 80-minute live concert that was taped at the Omnisport in Paris,France on December 9,1999.Great,crisp and clear-as-a-bell picture and sound quality.A REAL treat for all true fans. After viewing the live segment,I can now see why this band has such a huge fan base.Tunes I remember liking the best were "Promises","Salvation","Pretty When You're Gone",their memorable "Zombie" and "Dying In The Sun".Wasn't that familiar with most of the other songs they played. Also dug the extras the DVD provides, like their unplugged video of "Yesterday's Gone",photo gallery, etc.Very nice.A should-have,and a must-have for all Cranberries fans."
