As a viewer who has read Colour Out of Space by Lovecraft, I can say that this movie follows the core elements of the story's plot and has some pretty good special effects considering how difficult it is to put what Lovecraft describes on film. Other than that, the film makes some significant detours in characterizing the threat, presumably in an attempt to 'modernize' or 'improve' on the story. In this effort, it fails to capture the feel of the original story - especially when the characters do incredibly unlikely things in the face of danger (e.g. **SPOILERS** the boy puts on welding glasses right before he dies so he can "see" it coming, the husband asks the kids to carry the wife/son upstairs (?) when they realize the car won't start, the sheriff leaves a man he just shot to ostensibly bleed out whilst going to rescue another man who might be in the woods in a shack).
I'll give the filmmakers credit for making something in the 'spirit' of Lovecraft, but I would dispute the Fresh rating on Rotten tomatoes as advertised. All things considered, if you want to see a film version of the story, watch the Curse with Wil Wheaton instead.
