AVOID AT ALL COSTS
09/22/1999
(1 out of 5 stars)
"Beware! Just because it's a DVD doesn't automatically mean the image quality is good. Do not buy these DVDs. They are a waste of money. There are many wonderful restorations of early silent cinema by Film Preservation Associates and David Shepard and others. These are the farthest things from it. The DVD transfer made from wretched prints with ridiculous music accompaniment. They should be ashamed!"
I wish I could give it NO stars!

"I wish I could give it NO stars, but this is the lowest I could choose. It's bad when a marvelous comic like Chaplin has his legend reflected like this. These are horrible DVD transfers, so bad, you cannot understand much of what is occuring in the film. Save your money and put it toward the Mutuals collection. Or go buy ice cream with it, at least you'll get some pleasure rather than the pain of watching this garbage. After releasing these Chaplins and that shoddy version of 'Metropolis', I doubt I will ever buy a DVD made by Madacy entertainment again."
"The Chaplin Collection" fails to deliver

""The Chaplin Collection" serves as an unfortunate reminder of what happens to classic films once their copyrights expire, and not-so-reputable publishers move in to take advantage of unsuspecting consumers. Poor production value and a genuinely amateurish package all around are made even worse by images so poor as to make the collection almost unbearable to watch. The memory of Charlie Chaplin and his cinematic genius deserve better. Avoid at all cost."
WASTE O MONEY

Ghastly!
Edwin Graf Diemer | Red Bank, NJ USA | 10/15/2000

"Miserable transfers from what look like battered home movies photographed from a screen. Titles are not centered, images are blurry-I could go on and on. Got rid of my copy immediately! Grab the wonderful David Shepard restorations of the Mutuals instead on DVD or laserdisk, and wait for him to finish the Essanay series, if it isn't completed already. This set is worthless."
