I watched this movie in the theaters without knowing much about it. The movie was great and for once, Scarlett Johansson was not used as eye candy. She was the voice over for the os Phoenix picked. For me, setting the movie in the future was bittersweet. First, the bitter part: we see the loss of interaction between people because they are so wrapped up in their technology. Apparently, we are heading in that general direction. Secondmy, the sweet part: the end presents us with hope with the departure of technology (in the sense that we become less dependent and less focused on them) we can actually see the beauty around; our friends, our neighbors, etc. That's my take on the movie. 2 of 3 member(s) found this review helpful. ![]() Reviewed on 7/24/2014... wow - this one caught me completely by surprise. i had no idea what it was about before watching it. i like amy adams and phoenix is an acting superstar so i checked it out. what a wonderful surprise. it's basically an old school sci-fi story about a sensitive man who writes personal letters for people who either can't or won't write them to their loved ones themselves. kind of like a greeting card writer but with more personal details. his wife leaves him and he ends up falling in love with his new computer OS - operating system. it's much better than that sounds but i won't go into any detail so as not to spoil the story. wonderfully acted, well written, great voice over work by johansson, the story reminds me of a science fiction tale i might have read back in the 70's but it's very appropriate given todays technology. i was very disappointed with the ending, i don't know if it was true to the story that was probably written first or not, just didn't feel right given the pathos of the characters. but definitely worth checking out if you're into sci-fi or philosophy or just appreciate great acting. bossajake 3 of 4 member(s) found this review helpful.
