I have a few books and I managed to make chains but after that I couldn't figure it out. I guess I need to actually see someone do it and I don't know anyone who does crochet. So I found this DVD at the library and watched it. It has the basic stitches and I did all of them that day. I am now working on my very first project (spa cloth which you can find the pattern on the DVD) after only a day or two of getting the DVD. It is great to be able to pause, rewind, go forward, etc. and I just go back if I missed something or if I want to watch her do it again. Some things she does rather quickly but if you just sit and watch her do it a few times and listen to what she says you will get it down easily. This is highly recommended for those who are like me and have to see it to be able to figure it out. 6 of 7 member(s) found this review helpful.

While having a book or two on crocheting is certainly helpful, a newbie like myself found this DVD to be the most valuable in terms of actually learning basic stitches. The close-ups of Melissa's hands make it easy to see exactly what she is doing. Once you get the basics down, the written directions in books are much easier to understand. I started with the DVD, practiced my stitches and then went with a pattern in one of my books. If you cannot afford a DVD, check out YouTube.
