Winnie (short for Winnipeg) was a bear celeb in her own right, having been adopted as a cub by a conscripted veterinarian undergoing basic training in Canada. Eventually, he smuggles Winnie to England before having to consign her into the care of the London Zoo when his deployment orders send him to battle during World War I.
