The action-packed special features are served up at an appropriate fast and furious pace on Universal's collector's edition of
The Fast and the Furious, a thrilling take on the underground sports of urban drag racing and car theft, which looks great in widescreen (2.35:1) and in Dolby 5.1 Surround. At the top of the long list of features is a segment that shows the eight different camera angles used to film the climactic crash; the viewer watches each one separately and then clicks on to watch the finished version. Similarly, there's a "movie magic" sequence that shows the details of how the breathtaking race across train tracks -- with the train coming full throttle at two cars -- was put together. Less interesting is a visual effects montage, which could use narration to put the shots in context. In what may be a DVD first, two unidentified film editors are shown at their computer editing terminals trying to trim images from an offending sequence that would take the movie's rating into the MPAA's R territory. A text copy of the
Vibe magazine article that inspired the movie is included, and other text features include the usual production notes and cast bios. Deleted scenes have the option of director
Rob Cohen's commentary, there are four top-drawer music videos, two different storyboard-to-film comparisons, and an entertaining "making of" featurette. The interActual 2.0 player that links the DVD-ROM function to Universal loaded in nicely, but shut down the Internet connection each time "online features" was pressed, so there was no online access to outtakes, games, or a demo. ~ Buzz McClain, All Movie Guide
